Summary

As part of GCC 2.0, the cloud management portal (CMP) was created to allow users to manage their commercial cloud solutions.

The Challenge

As this project started from the ground up, a lot research needed to be done to understand who are the users to be onboarded into the portal and what are their needs.

The Team

The CMP team, as part of the larger group working on the GCC project, had a diverse composition with developers, product managers, and designers.

Project Goals

Understand who are the users of the portal and their needs.

Identify the current challenges faced by users with the existing process.

Design a portal to help users manage their commercial cloud solutions.

Research Objectives

Understand the end-to-end process of how users are making their decision relating to their cloud solutions.

Uncover the different factors that determine their decisions.

Identify any problems or barriers they encounter during their user journey.

Learn about any improvements users might make to their current decision-making process.

Research Methods

User feedback

User interview

Focus group

Persona creation

User journey mapping

Usability testing

Context

Although the CMP project began from scratch, there is an existing portal used by the users of GCC 1.0 which was developed by a third party vendor. Despite user dissatisfaction with the GCC 1.0 portal and there are plans to involve users with cloud-related tasks who are not currently users of the portal. Nevertheless, the GCC 1.0 portal serves as a valuable starting point for us to gain insights into how we should approach the CMP project for GCC 2.0

User Feedback

We started off the project by collecting feedback of users of GCC 1.0 to understand how onboarding and management of their cloud solutions is like on the current portal.

Results

As anticipated, users have expressed overall dissatisfaction with the GCC 1.0 portal. However, by gathering user feedback and engaging in discussions with team members who are also GCC 1.0 users, we have gained valuable insights into one of the primary issues: the lack of clear differentiation between roles and their respective capabilities.

Focus Group

Our subsequent step involved conducting a focus group discussion to identify and comprehend the specific roles and tasks within the portal. By gaining a comprehensive understanding of these distinct roles and associated tasks, we aim to establish clear differentiations within the portal.

Persona Creation & User Journey Mapping

Based on the focus group results, we successfully generated user personas and employed user journey mapping to visualise the step-by-step process users undergo, capturing their thoughts and emotions in detail.

Flow Diagram

Next we created a flow diagram to visualise the user's movement through the product, mapping out each and every step the user takes—from entry point right through to the “final interaction”. In this case, we defined the final interaction as the core function of the portal which is to allow users to manage their commercial cloud solutions.

Usability Testing

We then created prototype based on the Singapore Government Design System and have our targeted users of the GCC 2.0 portal to test out the interface we created and make adjustment from there

Results

We made the adjustments based of the usability testing results and successfully launch GCC 2.0 cloud management portal. Aside from some minor issues, overall users reported a much higher level of satisfaction with the new portal compared to the old one.
