A one week workshop to produce a furniture piece under the guidance of swedish furniture designer Staffan Holm.
Exhibited at Greenhouse, Stockholm Furniture Fair 2019
The Challenge
To conceptualise and produce a furniture held together with only woodworking joints and no nails within a week.
The Team
This is a pair work done with one other under the guidance of swedish furniture designer Staffan Holm.
Project Goal
To design a product that utilise the forgotten spaces of our everyday lives. Combining utilitarian function and visual aesthetics.
Concept 1
Leaning planter stand to utilise the area along the common corridor.
This concept was conceived as modern living spaces are getting smaller while urban farming is increasing in popularity.
Concept 2
A three piece set consisting of a stool, footstool and shoehorn to be place by the entrance of your home.
This concept was conceived as it was a familiar act of sitting by the porch and putting on your shoes before leaving your home. The three piece set can be kept away neatly by nesting one under another.
By combining elements of both concepts, Last Step was formed.
Last Step, a leaning furniture meant to be placed by the front door of the house. The product has been designed around the sub-conscious daily behavior of an individual who is about to leave their home.
Dovetail hooks
Hooks for users to hang their coat, bags or keys. The dovetail joint was used because of it's strength.
Marble foot rest
Piece of marble to accent where the user should place their foot when tying their shoelaces, as well as provide protection to the wood from wear and tear.
Learnings
Understanding user behaviour
Often times in furniture design, it is about using different materials and forms to create aesthetic pieces. However, when creating a new archetype, observing and understanding user behaviour will greatly impact the usability of a product.
